Yahoo is the second most important search engine and if you ask anyone in China, Yahoo is the #2 search engine only behind Baidu, and in that country Yahoo is very well represented and has great partners (like Alibaba.com) that keep them in the mindshare of Chinese internet users. Yahoo has about 14% of the UK market and I believe 25-30% of the US market. Its traffic is not to be ignored.
I have my own theory about Yahoo. Yahoo as a search engine is more focused on the business field than on the information field. Yahoo has concentrated their efforts on online stores, real estate, car sales and other business related companies. I looks like their algorithm is optimized in a way to answer queries related with online business, while Google has optimized their algorithm for information in general, since Google’s algorithm works better in that field than Yahoo’s algorithm. Everybody’s heard of Photoshop; it’s the world’s gold standard when it comes to image editing software. Part of this is due to its age, and part to its capability. The web is a graphical medium, so it makes sense for people who run web sites to have a basic understanding of Photoshop.
There are two “standard” complaints about the application: it has a steep learning curve ( in part because it’s so powerful - there are simply “too many” options for new users, who tend to feel overwhelmed ) and its price. In US Dollars, Photoshop CS 3 is $650, while the extended version goes for $1,000. This is mainly of use to people who need to manipulate images in 3D space, or movies on a frame-by-frame basis.
Photoshop Without Photoshop
Because of the high cost, we should start by looking at some alternatives to Photoshop. These run the gamut from open source freeware to closed source commercial applications - the competition - and, ironically, trimmed down versions of Photoshop itself. For the web designer on a budget, some other software to consider is: [Read more →]

Some exciting changes here in GeoLand,
First off the theme has changed I hope for the better, I have gotten sick of the old theme and needed a change, now it feels like a new haircut …
The theme was inspired by cutline wordpress them, thought I would just change a few stuff in it and be done with it, but the perfectionist that I am I could not stop at small changes …. I ended up rearranging and recoloring the whole thing, updating some php code etc. Still I am not sure if I can call it my own. I have had a debate with friends on what consitutes an original design and everyone had a different opinion on it, I still consider it my own design since it does not look at all like its predecessor, or does it ? I would love to hear your opinion on the subject
I have added the very handy show top commentators wordpress plugin to the right sidebar in order to get some more people involved in the discussion. Seriously it feels kind of lonely here some times … so if you have something to say … post a comment … the top commentators will get the benefit of a link to their website from every page of this blog … so everyone wins.
I am still looking for more people to write articles for GeoLand since I am very busy with projects and I am not very good writer anyway so if you have a article that you want to post here please contact me.

The notorious Keyword suggestion tool from Overture (Yahoo) seems to be down for the last few days. I have noticed it myself and I have noticed a few other posts mentioning that its probably gone forever. I don’t think that its a permanent shut down of the tool otherwise there would be at least a Note on that page indicating it. On the other hand there is not even a note that the tool is out of order … well we will wait and see.
Due to this, the search engine queries estimates tool I just released a couple of months ago is unable to function (its getting the results from he overture database). If you are looking for a keyword tool please refer this list of keyword suggestion tools.
